Finnikin of the Rock
Finnikin of the Rock
Melina Marchetta

"He looked down at his oversize feet and wondered how it would be possible to balance them on so narrow a ledge.

'Not for our feet boy,' Sir Topher said with a sigh." (Page 4)

I'm only about 10 pages in, but I'm dying to read more! I am now off to lunch to dive into this book :)

Numbers
Rachel Ward

"Date of Death. If only I’d known that was what it was, I could have told her, stopped her, I don’t know. Would it have made a difference?" (Page 5)

Even though this book does have a paranormal element, the gritty situations the characters encounter makes the story more fathomable. This book would have a surprising appeal for readers who enjoy realistic fiction. Jem maybe a character with an extraordinary ability, but her problems are real world issues.

Wolfsbane
Andrea Cremer

"He ran his hands through his hair as he spoke. I considered bolting-he was clearly distracted-but something about his manner mesmerized me, enough so that I didn't know if escape was what I really wanted anymore." (Page 11)

If you are a paranormal fan then you must read this series. I LOVED "Nightshade" and I can't wait to get a chance to dive into "Wolfsbane".

Beware of the Delicious Cookie Dough

I'm not a huge baker (or cook for that matter), but every year around the holidays I hunt down the Mickey Mouse Cookbook from my childhood and with a bit of tweaking, bake the best sugar cookies I've ever eaten! I am extremely biased, but that is beside the point. While making these cookies I always cave into my craving and find myself eating a bunch of the cookie dough. Don’t look at me like that; you know you do the same! Even if your parents have warned you about the dangers of eating raw eggs, somehow the fact that you are forbidden to do so makes it taste better.

I know you are probably thinking that I need to get to my point, so I will do so right now! I just came across an article revealing that according to CDC researchers eating raw cookie dough is dangerous to eat not just because of the eggs, but because other ingredients may also carry dangerous bacteria. The ingredient they are concerned about may surprise you! So even if, like me, you are trying to be slick and avoid the danger of eating raw eggs in cookie dough by substituting eggs for milk and extra butter, there are other ingredients that can be just as dangerous to eat without cooking. The article is super short, so don’t worry that I am sending you to read pages of boring sciency info about the dangers of uncooked food. If it was wordy, I would not have read it!

"Between Shades of Gray"
Between Shades of Gray
Ruta Sepetys

"I looked own at the little pink face in the bundle. A newborn. The child had been alive only minutes but was already considered a criminal by the Soviets." (Page 21)

I am almost 300 pages in and can't get enough of "Between Shades of Gray". This book can be difficult to read because of some of the horrible experiences the characters have, but Sepetys is such a beautiful storyteller that I am compelled to continue reading even if I am disgusted at what is happening.

P.S. I know it is Wednesday, but shhhhh... don't tell anyone I was late with my posting. It is our little secret.
